When you form a new Virginia LLC or Virginia corporation, you have to choose a name for your new entity. Over time, you may decide that a name change is appropriate. It is possible to change the legal name of your Virginia limited liability company or Virginia corporation by making a filing with the Virginia State Corporation Commission. You will need the agreement of the other owners of your company.

If you need to register your new business(or new to Virginia business) with the Virginia Department of Taxation so that you can pay Virginia employees, collect sales tax, pay unemployment taxes, or pay other taxes, you can do so completely online. Just visit the VATAX online portal and follow the steps. You can also complete the required registration process with the Virginia Employment Commission (VEC) there, too. On July 1, 2011, Virginia became the fourth state in the U.S. to approve the creation of a new type of entity - the benefit corporation. A benefit corporation is a hybrid between a for-profit corporation and a non-profit corporation. It provides the owners and directors of the benefit corporation the power to devote a portion of the benefit corporation's assets to a charitable mission. The particular charitable mission of the benefit corporation must be stated in the Articles of Incorporation and annual reporting on results is required.
